Last month a new law had been signed by Indiana governor Mike Pence, this anti-LGBT law allows businesses to deny gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgenders from entering their business and being served.
The new law states that in Indiana store owners can refuse service to anyone a part of the LGBT community. This law was put into action due to “religious beliefs;” however many believe this is discrimination. Pence, however continues to say that it is not about discrimination. He claims this law was signed to allow businesses “to turn away gay and lesbian customers in the name of religious freedom.”
According to Pence, he is willing to clarify the law but the law will not be still be passed. Conversely, many members of the Indiana legislature say they plan to fix the law, that is quickly giving a bad reputation to the state. If two guys or girls walked into a restaurant wanting to eat why are they not able to be served because of who they love? The LGBT community is not causing harm to anyone by simply eating somewhere. In the year 2014, many states legalized same-sex marriage. In fact 19 US states allow same-sex marriage, but Indiana seems like they are going back to 1990s by creating anti-LGBT laws.
Over 200,000 people on Twitter have used the hashtag #BoycottIndiana trying to make a difference in Indiana. The law is set to go into effect July 1st. Angie’s List was among the first companies based in Indiana to reject the law and the changes recently made to the law. Which other companies will follow suit?
